2015-2016 Back to School Information
Welcome to the new school year!
As we usher in the new school year, we want to ensure that we are all well-prepared and well-informed. With that in mind, here are a few things you need to know to help us roll the year out successfully:
Mark your calendars! Our Curriculum Night will be held on Thursday, September 10th, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. During that time, classroom teachers will share information about learning goals for the year and ways in which families can support learning at home. We will also enjoy popsicles outside on the back lawn. Please visit the PTO table to learn more about PTO membership and leadership opportunities.
First Day of School
Grades 1st-5th: Wednesday, August 26th, 2015, 8:10-2:50. There will be no early release on the first day of school.
Kindergarten: From August 26th-28th, kindergarteners (and their parents) will meet by appointment with their teacher. Then, on Monday, Aug 31 and Tuesday Sept. 1, half the kindergarten students will attend ½ day only as per the communicated schedule. September 2 and 3, half the kindergarten students will attend full day. On Tuesday, September 8, all kindergarten students begin attending full days.
Grades K-5: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 8:10-2:50 and Wednesday from 8:10-1:50.
For your child’s safety, please do not send your child to school any earlier than 7:45 a.m. as there is no supervision until 7:45 a.m.
Crossing Guards: For your child’s safety, there are crossing guards located on the following corners:
Alder and Bridge
Hobson and Roosevelt
Crossing guards are at their crosswalks from 7:45-8:05 and 2:50-3:05 (1:50-2:05 Wednesdays). Please tell your child not to cross the street until the crossing guard is there.
Bikes/Scooters: If a child rides a bike/scooter to school, the following guidelines apply:
Walk bike/scooter across all manned crosswalks.
- Walk bike/scooter on school grounds. Bikes/Scooters must be parked at the bike racks and should be locked. We do not have a storage area for skateboards.
Buses: Bus transportation is provided to children who live outside a one-mile radius around the school. Bus information for Edison Elementary is posted on the district’s website. This information includes bus stops and the time schedule. One of Walla Walla School District’s policies is that each kindergarten student must have a parent or authorized caregiver at the bus stop in order for the driver to release the child.
Student Drop off and Pick up: The back parking lot is our designated student drop-off and pick-up lot. Please do not drop your child off in the morning or pick your child up in the afternoon using the front parking lot. This lot is reserved for buses and teacher parking. The only exception to this is for our families who have Handicapped Parking permits. Unless you have one of these permits, you will be asked to drop your child off and/or pick your child up from the back parking lot.
Back Lot: Many parents drop their children off and pick them up using our back parking lot. Our primary concern during these times is child safety. To help us keep all children safe, please drive slowly when in the parking lot. The first person to enter the lot should drive to the end of the parking lot and all cars in the line follow. Please park parallel to the curb and then pull forward to leave when the way is clear. For safety purposes, NEVER park in such a way that requires you to back into or out of a spot. The back parking lot opens for pick-up at 2:45 p.m. Thank you for your patience and cooperation during these busy times.
Restraining Orders: If you possess a restraining order against another person or if you have a parenting plan, it is very important that you provide our office with the most current documents that have the signature or stamp of the judge who issued it. We are legally unable to deny parent contact with a child if we do not have the most current paperwork.
Medication: If your child needs medication given at school, please stop by the office to get a Medical Request form or download a form from the Health Services Resource page (http://www.wwps.org/departments/health-services/health-resources #Medication Information) on the district website. As per state law, this form must be completed by a medical provider and must be on file in the school clinic before prescription and/or over-the-counter medication can be administered. Medication must be in its original container with an original label.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel welcome to call us or stop in the office. The staff and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, August 26th, on the first day of school!
